  • FAQ | Mobile Memory

How do you keep everyone safe? At Mobile Memory Enrichment we make safety a top priority during COVID. That is why we are: Fully vaccinated Masks wearing Wash and sanitize our hands before during, and after every session. We are dedicated to making sure that ALL activity pieces are cleaned and sanitized appropriately. Why are activities important for dementia patients? WHY ENGAGING THOSE WITH MEMORY LOSS IS SO IMPORTANT There is a unique grief that accompanies those who care for persons with memory loss. It goes beyond the understanding that we may lose their physical being. It is the understanding that we may have already lost them while they are right in front of us. Perhaps what is most upsetting is that we have no idea what to do to connect with them. We feel our interactions are no longer valid. As we tend to them in every physical way, we are faced with the painful realization that we may feel as displaced and shut out as they do. Much of the time, employing activities, even in facilities, can be a challenge. Understandably, the focus of attention is squarely on daily care spreading thin the time a caregiver can interact with their charge. But research has continually shown that physical activity benefits muscle strength, balance, and the avoidance of falls. Activities that have a cognitive approach heighten awareness, are unparalleled in dealing with behaviors, and may slow progression of the disease. Used together physical and cognitive engagement are exponentially beneficial. There is an incalculable need of activity for those with memory loss and their families. It gives families a time of respite, further it gives them a way to reconnect on many levels and have more meaningful time with their loved one. As time can be precious under any circumstance, caring for a loved one with memory loss can muddle what time there is to enjoy each other. Meaningful activities can reduce exasperation that caregivers sometimes feel in trying to reach and connect with their loved one. Behaviors that sometimes rise from those with memory loss can be frustrating, scary, and may leave families at a loss as to what can be done. Certainly, behaviors can be taxing on primary caregivers but often affect the entire family in undesirable ways. As the loss of connection between the person with memory loss and that of the caregiver fades, there can be an influence on everyone around them causing a connection gap that impacts the whole family. For those with memory loss activities provide pathways to what they once knew and discover what makes them contented, calm, and comfortable in the here and now. Activities are used to assist in alleviating troubling behaviors and encourage development of self-worth and purpose. Losing memory does not mean the end of the person or their feelings. Rather, those feelings are closed away in a place that is often confusing. Perhaps music is the way in, or simple chores often thought to be beyond the capabilities of those with memory loss. Conversation cards, books with intriguing pictures, or even baby dolls can be inspiring. Maybe a loved one carried a favored Teddy Bear as a youngster. Involving a bear may build a bridge of communication. Talking about the rides, the wares, the vendors and involving a loved one in creating corn dogs can bring back the delightful feelings of days at the carnival. A traveling suitcase filled with fascinating photos, memorabilia, and even travel brochures that take one to exotic and wonderful places. So much can be shared and shared again in this one activity. Utilizing a home-visit activities service can be invaluable. Activities can inspire well-being and greater independence, things that are so hard won for those with memory loss. For those tending to a loved one in their homes, a person-based, home-visiting service is legitimately a lifeline. It affords the time for a small hiatus to regroup and reenergize. Feelings of isolation can be severe and detrimental to both family and the person being cared for. A moment to oneself, a moment of fun or self-care; is something that is wholly encouraged. As on a plane flight, you must put the oxygen over your own face first to assist others. Familiarity in surroundings and the feelings of safety are paramount for those who live with memory loss. Introducing activities and teaching the family ways that their loved one can still engage is nearly miraculous. Having all of this using an in-home service, without the need to transport, is the ultimate benefit. Overall, understanding, recognizing, and utilizing taught activities can enrich the person and the family. “Giving every individual with memory loss a sense of purpose through life-enriching activities.” -Mobile Memory Enrichment What do we offer? Is it possible to care for someone with dementia at home? This is a common question. The answer is, it depends on various factors. -Are there family members that are able to help? -How safe is the home? -What support systems are in place? -Do they have to live with someone? -What is their financial standing? -Can you afford in-home services? -Can they live alone with supportive services? -Do they need round the clock care? The goal is to keep them at home as long as it benefits you and them. Every circumstance is different.

  • Activities | Mobile Memory

"Stimulate the Mind and... You Unlock the Person" -Jesse Azzopardi Activities Mobile Memory Enrichment is holistic in its approach. Every activity is designed for positive reminiscence. We strive to connect caregivers and families at every level. Here are a few activities our team employs involving cognition, physical activity, mental health, and behavior modification. Reminiscence Reminiscing is a significant way to stimulate memories. As we all know, there are good and bad memories that may arise. However, our approach is to stimulate positive reminiscing with every activity we present. Activities that unlock the person inside. Tip: One of the best things you can do is create a simple album of copied pictures. Label each person, husband, wife, son, daughter, caregiver, etc, and then pull it out for reference. This is a great tool for families and caregivers. Occupational Activities For many with memory loss, the inability to do what had been an occupation is felt as a great loss. We strive to encompass activities that utilize vocational skills. Mobile Memory Enrichment focuses on what each individual CAN do rather than what they CANNOT. When a project is finished, there is an immense sense of accomplishment and self-value. TIP: A block of wood and a few pieces of various grit sandpaper will do the trick. The tactile experience grows with each grit. Music Circles and Music Based Activities The foundation of nearly every activity we do at Mobile Memory Enrichment is based on music. We tend to identify and recite lyrics of songs that we know and love. Music generates joyful feelings and unlocks the person inside. Playing Big Band or Sock Hop music with physical exercise gives a cheerful feel to something that might not have been enjoyable before. We also offer music/drum circles that facilitate group participation and aid in mind and body rhythms. TIP: If someone is having behaviors, whether sad or angry, try providing a genre of music or specific song that they usually sing along with. Distraction and redirection are key to lessening behaviors. Tactile What are tactile activities? These are tangible things that are connected to feelings. When individuals cannot remember what they lost and are given something to hold, it brings something tangible to the empty "lost" space. Remember your favorite doll, blanket, G.I Joe, teddy bear, car, or stuffed animal? What did you feel when you had that item? What did your loved one have when they were growing up? The feelings resurface when these items are presented. Tip: Presenting something soft can stimulate happy memories of a past pet. Suitcase Travel We love this activity! Open one of these vintage bags and a whole world is ready to be explored! Books, magazines, postcards, pictures, and even travel brochures are ready to create - or recreate - memories of places we’ve been or have always wanted to go. Suitcase Travel is used in conjunction with various foods, music, and even aromatherapy, to truly integrate the experience of where we are “traveling.” Visuals, smells, tastes, and feeling are all presented in a fun and positive way. TIP: National Geographic or You Tube can be easily used to create a travel space. Look to You Tube for First Person Walks and Hikes. Physical Activity Making physical activity fun is paramount at Mobile Memory Enrichment. The word, “exercise” can often remind individuals with memory loss of something that they did not enjoy. Instead, we create an environment of music and enjoyment. Every physical activity, whether seated or standing, is designed to foster physical abilities in. Stretching, chair dancing, and balloon toss are just a few of the many activities we employ. TIP: Playing upbeat music from the era and culture of a loved one is a great way to involve them in physical activity. Make sure to set this activity up in the same area each time, assuring a routine that will be recognized. History We all know that history is an integral part of all our lives. Events, advancements and happenings can be presented in a positive way as a stimulator for memories. For example, using an object that’s historical like a pocket watch, famous photos or a souvenir of the Seattle Space Needle are just some things that can be presented. We use historical pieces and photos as educational lessons that allow positive memories to flow. Tip: When presenting a historical piece, start small. Give them a picture to hold while you read a sentence or two about the corresponding event. This gives a visual and auditory reference. • What people say about Jesse | Mobile Memory

What People Say About Jesse " Jesse has been the brightest light in the lives of my mother and dad…and me. My dad had commented many times that he had “lost his Linda” so she set up date nights with the two of them. Each date night, Jesse made a new dish for them to share. With music in the background, they reveled in each other’s company and spent lovely evenings reconnecting. My mother was so engrossed and so full of joy whenever Jesse came to us with activities. She used aroma therapy, music and singing, and simple household chores that my mother thought she couldn’t accomplish anymore to engage her. She also enabled me to have time away from a sometimes-stressful environment; encouraging me to spend time doing things that made me happy. When I made the decision to place my parents in a foster care facility, Jesse continues to spend time with my parents, even though she no longer formally works for us. She brings such pleasure and comfort to me and to my parents. I trust her completely and know that she unequivocally cares for us all. I cannot recommend her services enough. Anyone who spends any amount of time with Jesse, with her smile, her laughter, her absolute commitment, her professionalism, and her compassion cannot be anything but better off." -K.T Contactează-ne Ask us about our gift Certificates mobilememoryenrichment@gmail.com | Tel: 503-662-9222 Keeping participants safe Trimite Vă mulțumim că ați trimis!
